🐢 The Caribbean Jewel in Critical Danger
The hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) is beauty, living history, and reef balance— but today it needs our protection more than ever.
Among coral reefs and turquoise waters lives an animal as ancient as it is elegant: the hawksbill turtle. Its golden shell made it an icon— and also a historic target of illegal trade.
Protecting it isn’t just saving a “pretty species”: it’s safeguarding reef balance, one of the planet’s most fragile and valuable ecosystems.
🌊 What is the hawksbill turtle like?
It is recognizable by its overlapping scutes, which resemble roof tiles, and its curved beak, adapted for feeding inside reef crevices.
- Size: up to approximately 90 cm.
- Weight: 45–75 kg.
- Diet: sponges, anemones, jellyfish, and algae, depending on the area.
- Lifespan: commonly 30–50 years, although it may be longer.
🐚 Home of the hawksbill: tropical reefs
The Mexican Caribbean is an important refuge. In places such as Mahahual, Xcalak, Cozumel, and Akumal , sea turtles form part of an extraordinary coastal ecosystem.
- During the day: hawksbills may rest among coral formations, caves, and rocky ledges.
- While foraging: they move across reefs searching for food in crevices and coral structures.
🥚 Life cycle: a journey back home
Females show philopatry: they have a strong tendency to return to regions associated with their natal area for reproduction and nesting.
- Adult females may spend several years between reproductive seasons.
- Incubation: approximately two months, although this varies with environmental conditions.
- Only a small proportion of hatchlings survive to adulthood.
Sand temperature influences the sex ratio of hatchlings, making warming beaches an additional conservation challenge.
⚠️ Threats it faces
- Poaching and illegal trade in turtle-shell products.
- Plastic pollution: ingestion and entanglement.
- Bycatch: nets, hooks, and other fishing gear.
- Loss and transformation of nesting beaches caused by coastal development and human activity.
- Climate change: increasing temperatures, erosion, and extreme weather.

🛡️ Conservation efforts
Protection works best when communities are involved: patrols, monitoring, research, volunteering, and environmental education.
Across different areas of the Mexican Caribbean, beaches, nests, and hatchling routes are monitored to reduce risks during the reproductive season.
