MARGARITA
Mexico · Tequila · Mixology · Mexican Caribbean
100% agave tequila, orange liqueur, fresh lime, and a touch of salt. Few cocktails balance acidity, sweetness, and character as elegantly as the Margarita. Its origin remains surrounded by stories and legends, but its place among the great Mexican cocktails is undeniable.
A well-made Margarita appears simple: tequila, citrus, and orange liqueur. But that simplicity leaves very little room to hide mediocre ingredients.
Tequila provides the agave character. Lime brings acidity. Triple sec contributes orange aroma and sweetness. Salt, when used, changes the perception of every sip.
In a warm Caribbean destination such as Mahahual, that combination feels especially natural: fresh, aromatic, and direct.
📜 Who really invented the Margarita?
There is no definitive answer. For decades, numerous stories have credited different bartenders, restaurants, and hosts in Mexico and the United States.
What historical documents reveal more clearly is an evolution of tequila, citrus, and orange-liqueur drinks before the name Margarita became universal.
Published references describe a drink called the Tequila Daisy. The Daisy was already a classic cocktail family combining spirit, citrus, and sweetness.
The Café Royal Cocktail Book published a Picador made with tequila, Cointreau, and citrus, strikingly close to a modern Margarita.
A published Tequila Sour recipe included tequila, Cointreau, lime, and a salted rim, bringing together nearly every element associated with today’s Margarita.
By the early 1950s, the name Margarita appears publicly in association with tequila, orange liqueur, and citrus.
Both stories remain important parts of Margarita folklore. Herrera is frequently linked to Rancho La Gloria, while Margarita Sames claimed to have mixed her version in Acapulco in 1948. They are wonderful stories, but not definitive proof of a single inventor.

🌵 The heart of a Margarita: tequila
Tequila is not simply “agave alcohol.” It is a protected Mexican denomination produced under specific rules using blue agave, Agave tequilana Weber.
🌵 100% agave tequila
All fermentable sugars come from blue agave. It is an excellent choice when tequila should remain clearly present in the cocktail.
🍸 Tequila
This category may contain a minimum of 51% sugars from blue agave, with permitted additional sugars making up the remainder.
⚪ Blanco
Bright, direct, and agave-forward, making it especially useful with fresh citrus.
🟤 Reposado
Can add wood, vanilla, and spice notes for a deeper style of Margarita.
- Tequila: aporta estructura, agave y alcohol.
⚖️ Balance is the real secret
A Margarita should not taste only of tequila, sugar, or lime. All three principal elements should remain in balance.
- Tequila: structure, agave, and alcohol.
- Triple sec: sweetness and orange aroma.
- Lime: acidity and freshness.
- Salt: changes the perception of acidity, sweetness, and aroma.
- Ice: chills and provides essential dilution.
🌵 Tommy’s Margarita: a modern evolution
One of the most influential modern variations is the Tommy’s Margarita. It replaces orange liqueur with agave nectar, placing even greater emphasis on the tequila.

💧 Enjoy responsibly
Tropical weather can make a cold drink feel deceptively light, but a Margarita is still an alcoholic cocktail.
Stay hydrated, eat properly, and avoid combining alcohol consumption with driving, operating boats, or water activities requiring coordination and attention.
