The town

A Caribbean seaside town

Life in Mahahual revolves around the sea and its beachfront malecón. Along the coast you’ll find restaurants, small hotels, cafés, beach clubs, shops and local businesses.

The atmosphere changes depending on the day and cruise-ship arrivals, but quieter moments are still easy to find, especially early in the morning and later in the afternoon.

A simple plan: walk the malecón without rushing, stop by the sea and end the day watching the Caribbean light slowly change.

Underwater

The Mesoamerican Reef System

Off Costa Maya lies part of the Mesoamerican Reef System, one of the world’s most important barrier reef systems, stretching more than 1,000 km along the coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.

Its reefs provide habitat for a remarkable diversity of fish, sponges, crustaceans, sea turtles, rays and other Caribbean species.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed: each trip depends on the season, sea conditions, the site and the animals’ natural behavior.

  • Snorkeling

Local operators and guides offer options for exploring reef environments and observing marine life.

  • Diving

Certified divers can explore different reef formations and dive sites throughout the region.

Mar adentro

Offshore

Banco Chinchorro: a world of its own

About 30 km offshore lies Banco Chinchorro, a Biosphere Reserve—declared in 1996—formed by a large reef complex in the Mexican Caribbean.

Its isolation, reefs, cays and maritime heritage give it a unique identity within Costa Maya.

Access depends on sea conditions, the type of excursion and applicable regulations, so visits should be arranged with authorized operators.

Banco Chinchorro deserves much more than a brief mention. We have prepared a complete guide covering its geography, biodiversity, reefs, cays, maritime history, conservation and visitor experience.

Tierra adentro

Viajar responsablemente no significa disfrutar menos.

Conservation

How to travel responsibly

The Mahahual experience depends directly on the conservation of its ecosystems.

Coral reefs, mangroves, beaches, seagrass and jungle all form part of the same landscape.

  • Do not touch, feed or chase wildlife.
  • Never stand on or touch coral.
  • Reduce single-use plastics and take all waste with you.
  • Prefer UV-protective clothing, shade and other physical barriers when practical.
  • Reduce the amount of cosmetic products used immediately before entering the sea.
  • Choose operators that respect protected areas, wildlife and local regulations.
  • Support community and environmental initiatives when possible.
Responsible travel does not mean enjoying a destination less. It means leaving as little impact as possible so others can enjoy the same place in the future.
