El día 28 de marzo del presente año, aproximadamente a las 12:15 del mediodía, se cometió un acto de impunidad en Mahahual por parte de la policía estatal de Quintana Roo.

Ese día, Kevin Landa, habitante de Mahahual y conocido por la comunidad como una persona responsable, educada y de buenos valores, fue detenido de manera arbitraria, únicamente por su apariencia física (tatuajes y estilo), encajando en el perfil que las autoridades necesitaban para aparentar resultados en operativos contra el narcomenudeo.

On March 28 of this year, at approximately 12:15 p.m., an act of impunity took place in Mahahual involving the Quintana Roo state police.

That day, Kevin Landa, a Mahahual resident known in the community as a responsible, respectful person with strong values, was arbitrarily detained based solely on his physical appearance (tattoos and style), fitting the profile authorities allegedly needed to pretend they were producing results in anti-drug operations.

Relato de los hechos

Los hechos ocurrieron de la siguiente manera, según el testimonio de su pareja, Melissa Olvera, quien estuvo presente en el momento de la detención:

Kevin y Melissa circulaban en su automóvil por la colonia Casitas, en Mahahual, cuando fueron detenidos para una supuesta revisión de rutina. Desde el inicio, Melissa notó una actitud prepotente e intimidatoria por parte de los policías. Ella intentó grabar la situación con su celular, pero uno de los policías le arrebató el teléfono y también le quitaron su bolsa, donde llevaba sus identificaciones y tarjetas bancarias.

En cuestión de minutos, Kevin fue esposado sin que le dieran explicación alguna, lo subieron a la patrulla y se lo llevaron del lugar. Este hecho no ocurrió sin testigos, ya que una persona de la comunidad se percató de lo sucedido; sin embargo, por miedo, mantuvo su distancia mientras observaba los hechos.

Melissa y esta persona intentaron seguir la patrulla, pero los policías se retiraron a alta velocidad en dirección a Chetumal, sin informar a dónde lo trasladaban ni el motivo de la detención. Ante la falta de información, Melissa acudió al Ministerio Público y a la Fiscalía de Mahahual, donde no recibió ayuda ni información sobre el paradero de Kevin.

Durante horas, la familia y amigos buscaron información sin saber nada de él, hasta que aproximadamente a las 7:00 de la noche se confirmó que Kevin había sido trasladado y recluido en el centro de detención por narcomenudeo en Chetumal.

Account of the events

The events reportedly unfolded as follows, according to the testimony of his partner, Melissa Olvera, who was present at the time of the detention:

Kevin and Melissa were driving through Colonia Casitas in Mahahual when they were stopped for an alleged routine inspection. From the beginning, Melissa noticed an arrogant and intimidating attitude from the officers. She tried to record the situation on her phone, but one of the officers snatched it away, and they also took her bag, which contained her IDs and bank cards.

Within minutes, Kevin was handcuffed without any explanation, placed in the patrol vehicle, and taken away. This did not happen without witnesses, since a member of the community noticed what was happening; however, out of fear, that person kept some distance while observing the events.

Melissa and this person tried to follow the patrol vehicle, but the officers drove off at high speed toward Chetumal, without informing them where Kevin was being taken or why he was being detained. With no information available, Melissa went to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Mahahual Prosecutor’s Office, where she received neither help nor information about Kevin’s whereabouts.

For hours, family and friends searched for information without knowing anything, until approximately 7:00 p.m., when it was confirmed that Kevin had been transferred and held in the drug-related detention center in Chetumal.

Un llamado a la comunidad

No podemos permitir que este tipo de situaciones ocurran en nuestra comunidad. Hoy fue Kevin, mañana puede ser cualquier persona inocente juzgada únicamente por su apariencia.

Como muchos saben, en México se necesitan recursos económicos para enfrentar un proceso legal y poder demostrar la inocencia, por lo que se están recaudando fondos para apoyar a Kevin en los gastos legales.

A call to the community

We cannot allow situations like this to happen in our community. Today it was Kevin; tomorrow it could be any innocent person judged solely by appearance.
